Image Voice vs ALTerator
Last updated: September 11, 2026
Of every app we compared, this is the closest match, and on several counts ALTerator is ahead. It grades alt text. It writes in eighteen languages. It can roll bulk changes back. It starts at five dollars. If you arrived here expecting us to explain why it is worse, this is the wrong page — the honest version is that the two apps answer a slightly different question, and which question matters depends on your store.
What ALTerator actually does
From its App Store listing:
Grade every alt text (0-100) and instantly spot SEO improvement areas
Bulk generate AI alt text for products, collections, and blogs in 18 languages
Track changes and rollback bulk updates to restore original alt text instantly
So: it writes, it scores what it and others have written on a 100-point scale, and on its paid plans it keeps a history you can roll back. The listing does not say whether it looks at the image itself or writes from product data, so we will not guess.
Where ALTerator is better
- Languages. Eighteen by its own count, and its language list includes Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi and four Nordic languages. Image Voice writes in seven: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese. If you sell in any language outside those seven, ALTerator is the answer and this comparison is over.
- Price of entry. Basic is $5 a month (or $50 a year) for 200 images. Our paid entry, Keeper, is $8.90.
- Volume. Premium is $75 a month for 10,000 images.
- Control. Custom prompt refinement, category templates, word-count limits and downloadable CSV reports of every description applied. None of those are on our published plans.
What is actually different
Both apps grade. They grade for different things.
ALTerator's score is, in its own words, about spotting "SEO improvement areas" — a number out of 100 for how well a description serves search.
Image Voice's grade asks a narrower question: does this sentence describe this photograph? Every existing description is sorted into missing, junk, weak or good, and you are shown a vision-checked sample so you can read the verdict yourself rather than trust a number.
Those overlap, but not completely. A description can be strong for search and still say nothing a screen-reader user could picture — and a store under the European Accessibility Act or facing an ADA complaint cares about the second reading. If your priority is ranking, a 0–100 SEO score is a sensible tool. If it is whether a customer who cannot see the image knows what they are buying, the narrower grade is the one that answers it.
Two smaller differences, both from the listings:
- Undo on the free plan. Every Image Voice change is undoable for 30 days on every plan, free included. ALTerator's history and rollback start on its Basic plan; its free plan does not list them.
- What the free plan is. ALTerator's free plan is 50 generations, lifetime. Image Voice's is an audit of the whole store, free forever, plus a starter batch of descriptions to judge the writing on your own products.

What to do about it
Run the free audit on alt text ALTerator has written. No card, nothing written to your store.
If you sell in a language we do not write, stop here and install ALTerator. If you sell in one we do, the audit will show you whether descriptions that score well for search also describe what is in the frame. Where they do, you have lost nothing by checking.
